You’ve been hustling for a few years now, and Snoop’s appearance on the title track of Professional Rapper seems like the culmination of a few years of hard work. I feel like things are progressing in the right direction, like things are actually feeling “realer,” you know? Your new album Professional Rapper was at the top of the Billboard charts the week after its debut. Maxim caught up with Lil Dicky to discuss his newfound success, his unique style, and why he wants to be on TV. ![]() ![]() The hilarious music video for his first track “Ex-Boyfriend” racked up a million views in one day in 2013, and Dicky used his growing internet fame to slap together a Kickstarter campaign to fund Professional Rapper, raking in more than $110,000. “Professional Rapper” went viral after hitting the front page of Reddit, but this isn’t Dicky’s - aka David Burd’s - first trip to the viral rodeo. ![]() The scrawny, Philadelphia-born white lyricist, known for his humorous music videos and impressive flow, jumped to #1 on Billboard’s Rap Albums chart with the debut of his first full-length album Professional Rapper earlier in August, thanks, in part, to the appearance of the legendary Snoop Dogg in the music video for the album’s title track. The single reached number 17 on Billboard's Hot 100.Lil Dicky is having a moment. Focused on raising awareness about climate change, the song featured vocals from over 30 high-profile guests, including Ariana Grande, Snoop Dogg, Kevin Hart, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, John Legend, and many other stars. In April 2019, Lil Dicky released the charity single "Earth" and a corresponding animated music video for Earth Day, with the proceeds going to environmental charities. The single hit number one Billboard's Hot R&B Songs chart and number eight on the Billboard Hot 100. Following a 2017 EP from his side project Brain, Lil Dicky returned with 2018's "Freaky Friday," a collaboration with Chris Brown. The effort debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200 and topped the Top Rap, Comedy, and Independent Albums charts, becoming one of the biggest indie releases of the year. "Classic Male Pregame" landed a year later, along with Dicky's debut album, Professional Rapper, which featured guest appearances from Snoop Dogg, Fetty Wap, Hannibal Buress, and more, as well as the single "$ave Dat Money" with Fetty Wap and Rich Homie Quan. The 2013 hit landed on the So Hard mixtape that same year, while "White Crime" ("Walk into the movie with my pants full/Twix, bag of chips, plus a Snapple") dropped in 2014. He first saw rapping as a way to transfer musical success into television and film writing success, but when he posted "Ex-Boyfriend" and reached a million views within the week, hip-hop lover Burd realized his hip-hop dream was already a reality. A move to San Francisco came next, then he began working on Lil Dicky, writing rhymes, cutting demos, and storyboarding videos for two years before he showed them to the public. Fast like Twista but hilarious like the Lonely Island crew, actor and writer David Burd became rapper Lil Dicky in 2013 when he dropped the megahit "Ex-Boyfriend." Busting out of the Philadelphia suburbs, Burd graduated from the Richmond Robins School of Business in 2010 at the top of his class. ![]()
